The design history of Mules
The design of the Mule shoe was inspired by shape of a backless overshoe back in the 1600’s. Mules later became a fashionable indoor shoe in 1800's and even becoming associated with prostitutes.
The name Mule is actually a French word and gets its origins from Ancient Roman mulleus calces meaning a red shoe worn by magistrates.
The twentieth century saw the popularity of the mule heel rise through the influence of Marilyn Monroe, which helped to change the poor association. The style of the Mule evolved in the 1960/70’s and made a comeback in the form of an an open back clog - often associated with Scandinavian fashion trends
